What to do in July?
Other than watering, watering, watering - what else should you be doing this July in the garden?
Some easy jobs
Put saucers under your potted plants - they will act as a reservoir for plants to draw from during these long hot days.
Make more plants with Summer propagation - take advantage of our seed and propagation sale to get next years perennials and biennials and your winter pansies started from seed or take some summer softwood cuttings. (see below for details)
Deadheading - take the faded heads of your flowering plants to encourage further flowering and prevent them setting seed
Pick courgettes before they become marrows (unless you love marrows!) and harvest your lovely veggies and fruits.
Give your lawn a summer feed - especially if you haven't fed it in Spring. Try something like Evergreen 4 in 1 complete - thickens and greens lawns, controls weeds and moss. Summer propagation:
You can take cuttings of your existing plants (examples below) to make yourself new baby plants for use next year. If they are rooted well you could even plant them out in Autumn.
What can I take cuttings from? Examples include Argyranthemums, Buddleia, Callicarpa, Calycanthus, Caryopteris, Euonymus, Forsythia, Fuchsia, Hydrangeas, Lavatera, Lavender, Nemesia, Osteospermum, Pelargonium, Penstemon, Petunias, Rosemary, Salvia, Sambucus, Viburnum and Verbena.

Sowing Seeds in Summer
Summer is a great time to start biennials, some perennials and some hardy annuals off as seeds. Sowing in summer also causes less mess as you can keep your seeds outside and you have longer sunnier days .
Edibles to sow? dwarf french beans, salad onions, spinach, chard, spring cabbage, carrots, peas, pak-choi, lettuce, fennel
Ornamentals to sow? winter pansies, aquilegia, foxglove, lavender, lupin, delphinium, grasses, geum, rudbeckia, stocks, dianthus, scabious, hellebore, hollyhocks , wallflowers, echinacea, potentilla to name but a few.
