RHS Blossom Nest Box

£19.99

Featuring a high-quality open front design and a dark green and natural oak color scheme, the rustic robin Blossom nesting box should be placed in a hidden garden location by early January to attract these early-nesting songbirds. Robins often begin building nests as early as January if the weather is mild, though the breeding season usually starts in March. They prefer to nest in hollows, nooks, crannies, climbing plants, hedge-banks, tree roots, log piles, and other concealed spots near or on the ground.

For optimal use, mount the nest box 2-4 meters high on a tree or wall in a shaded location out of direct sunlight. Clean the nest box annually between September and January when unoccupied by simply removing the back panel and washing with boiling water. This allows for thorough sanitization during the non-breeding season

RHS Snuffles Hedgehog Box
£59.99

The RHS Snuffles Hedgehog Box comes with a tunnel to keep out predators and a waterproof roof and feet to raise the box to keep the hedgehogs dry. Place the hedgehog box in a shady, quiet area out of the wind and rain, ideally surrounded by plenty of undergrowth. A corner of the garden for example.

Leave a pile of dry leaves or straw outside the entrance that the hedgehogs can take inside to use for bedding. Clean the Hedgehog box in spring and early autumn. Make sure the hedgehogs have left the box and are not hibernating or breeding. Avoid cleaning in May through to early September as this is hoglet season.

Use hot soapy water and make sure that the box is well aired and dried after cleaning. If putting out food, leave it a couple of metres away as hedgehogs don’t tend to eat and sleep in the same place. Hedgehogs prefer specialist hedgehog food or tinned meaty dog or cat food and crushed cat or dog biscuits.

Never feed hedgehogs bread, milk or mealworms as these are bad for them. To prevent disease, as more than one hedgehog is likely to use the feeding station, remove any uneaten food and clean the dishes every day. Clean them outside, not in the kitchen, using hot soapy water and rinse well. Please make sure you secure the tunnel before use, with the two screws supplied.
