Fertilisers

Fertilisers continued…

Fertilisers are available in a great variety, and they vary in many ways, such as …

  • the way you apply them - liquids to water on, powders for diluting and watering on, granules, pellets or mulches.

  • whether they are man-made (growmore) or natural/organic (blood, fish & bone & chicken manure),

  • by how much Nitrogen(N), Phosphorous (P) & Potassium (K) they contain.  You can buy fertilisers than combine all three (compound fertilisers) or straight fertilizers than major in one nutrient.

What is N, P & K good for?

N/Nitrogen
: For green leafy growth  (Growmore is a high nitrogen feed)

P/Phosphorous: For healthy root and shoot growth  (bonemeal is highest in phosphorous - excellent when first planting & for bulbs, onions, tubers)

K/Potassium (aka Potash): For flowering, fruiting and general hardiness (lots of potassium in tomorite and similar feeds)

Take a look at this RHS article for more about fertilizers and how to make you own fertilisers such as nettle and comfrey tea!   Wormeries also produce great liquid fertiliser.
