An Apple A Day - Sep 2022
More English Apple varieties have arrived in the Farm Shop, fresh in from Ringden Farm that is based in East Sussex.
Lord Lambourne is a very nice fresh-eating apple that balances strawberry-like flavour with bracing acidity. The eager apple breeders at England's Laxton Brothers Nurseries drew out the strawberry-like flavour of one parent (Worcester Pearmain) and combined it with the refreshing acidity of the other (James Greive). The result is Lord Lambourne!
The Rosette is a new bright red early season apple, named for the rosette-like pattern of marbled pink flesh that is revealed when you cut the apple open. Red or pink flesh is very unusual, since most apples have a white or cream flesh, and it will certainly make your Rosette apples a talking point! The flesh does not brown (oxidise) and therefore can be used to add an interesting colour to savoury or fruit salads.
Akane is usually an early season apple with an unusually good balance of sweet and sharp flavours. The flesh is firm rather than crisp, but with plenty of juice. The Akane apple was developed in Japan in the 1930's and represents an unusual marriage of the English early variety, Worcester Pearmain and the high quality American heritage apple!
An apple a day really is good for you. The skin of apples, cooked or raw, contain important compounds called flavonoids. They are also a great source of pre-biotics and fibre. Dr Michael Mosley has been looking into this in his Just One Thing, Podcast (BBC Sounds), there is a brief review of that podcast in a newspaper article here if you prefer to read about it. Scientific studies have seen improvements in blood pressure, blood vessel function and cholesterol. So why not commit to an apple a day! All the varieties are so different.
